The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And all defilement shun! 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 And sons present by his side. 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he looked around, 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
