The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. 21 except those who are steadfast 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 and guard their private parts 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
