The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;- 3 Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And affirms goodness, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire, 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
