The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We shall facilitate the path to affliction 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
