The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise, and warn, 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 and purify your robes, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And give him vast riches, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
