a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
