The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
