The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 And your garments do purify, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And children present [with him] 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 Then he looked around, 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
