Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 So enter among My servants, 29 Enter then My garden." 30
