The chiefs of Firon's people said: most surely this is an enchanter possessed of knowledge: 109 and said, "He wants to expel you from your land." They asked (others), " what is your opinion in the matter? 110 They said: put him and his brother off, and send unto the cities callers. 111 to bring thee every cunning sorcerer.' 112 And the magicians came to Pharaoh and asked, "Shall we have a reward, if we should prevail?" 113 He said: Yes, and you shall certainly be of those who are near (to me). 114 They said: "O Moses! wilt thou throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?" 115 "You cast it first," answered Moses. When they cast their spell, they bewitched the eyes of the people and petrified them by conjuring up a great charm. 116 We inspired Moses to throw his staff, and suddenly it began to swallow-up all that the magicians had (falsely) invented. 117 ۞ Thus the truth prevailed and what they had produced came to nothing: 118 Thus there and then they were vanquished and overthrown, humiliated. 119 And the sorcerers prostrated themselves 120 They said: We believe in the Lord of the worlds, 121 The Lord of Musa and Haroun. 122 Pharaoh said: Ye believe in Him before I give you leave! Lo! this is the plot that ye have plotted in the city that ye may drive its people hence. But ye shall come to know! 123 I will cut off on opposite sides a hand and a foot, and then crucify you all' 124 They said: Lo! We are about to return unto our Lord! 125 You only take revenge on us because we believed in the Lord when we saw His miracles. Lord, grant us patience and let us die Muslims (submitted to God)." 126
