Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha Mim. 1 By the clear Book, 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 therein every wise bidding 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
