The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 for indeed he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
