Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha, Meem. 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
