The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
CONSIDER this unfolding [of God's message,] as it comes down from on high! 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 It [the Quran] is nothing but revelation sent down to him. 4 He has been taught (this Quran) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 Then he drew near, then he bowed 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 And assuredly he saw him at another descent. 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 Near it is the Garden of Refuge - 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 And Manat, the third - the other one? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
