A crowd of earlier generations 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
