He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 And what do you know, he may be of the pure! 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and fearfully, 9 You neglect. 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble, pious. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 and then made the course of life easy for him, 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Let Man consider his nourishment. 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his sons; 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 Laughing, joyous. 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
