Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
HaMeem 1 By the Clear Book 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 We now remove the punishment for some days – so you will again commit the same. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
