The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 except those that pray, 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
