The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Eager to roast; 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 except those that pray, 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
