The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 Dragging by the head, 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
