He Frowned ('Abasa)
42 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Stars (Al-Najm) before Destiny (Al-Qadr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 and who has fear of God, 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 Nay! surely it is an admonishment. 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted, pure. 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth. 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, 19 Then maketh the way easy for him, 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 then, He will raise him when He wills. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food. 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 and vines and edible plants, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 and fruits and pastures 31 (To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 with darkness overspread: 41 These will be the unbelievers, the wicked. 42
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
