Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Kaf. Ha. Ya. 'Ayn. Sad. 1 This is an account of your Lord's mercy bestowed upon His servant Zachariah, 2 When he called to his Lord a private supplication. 3 He said: "Lord! My bones have grown feeble and my head is glistening with age; yet, never have my prayers to You, my Lord, been unfruitful. 4 But I fear my relatives after me; and my wife is barren. So grant me a successor as a favour from You 5 Who should inherit me and inherit from the children of Yaqoub, and make him, my Lord, one in whom Thou art well pleased. 6 [Thereupon the angels called out unto him: "O Zachariah! We bring thee the glad tiding of [the birth of] a son whose name shall be John. [And God says,] "Never have We given this name to anyone before him." 7 [Zachariah] exclaimed: "O my Sustainer! How can I have a son when my wife has always been barren and I have become utterly infirm through old age?" 8 Allah said: even so! Thy Lord saith: it is unto Me easy, whereas surely I created thee afore when thou wast not aught. 9 He said, 'Lord, appoint to me some sign.' Said He, 'Thy sign is that thou shall not speak to men, though being without fault, three nights.' 10 Zachariah came out to his people from place of worship and inspired them to glorify the Lord both in the morning and evening. 11 (To his son came the command): "O Yahya! take hold of the Book with might": and We gave him Wisdom even as a youth, 12 as well as, by Our grace, [the gift of] compassion and purity; and he was [always] conscious of Us 13 And kind to his parents, neither arrogant nor disobedient. 14 So Peace on him the day he was born the day that he dies and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)! 15
