A throng of the ancients 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
