a large throng from the ancients, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 "We are ruined, 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
