He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 Exalted, Purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and pious. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 From what did He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 then, He will raise him when He wills. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 and olives, and palms, 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 and from his mother and father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 laughing and joyful, 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 Dust shall cover them 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
