We sent (aforetime), to the Thamud, their brother Salih, saying, "Serve Allah": But behold, they became two factions quarrelling with each other. 45 (Saleh) said: "O people, why do you wish to hasten evil rather than good? Why not ask for God's forgiveness? You may well be forgiven." 46 They said: We have met with ill luck on account of you and on account of those with you. He said: The cause of your evil fortune is with Allah; nay, you are a people who are tried. 47 There were in the city nine men of a family, who made mischief in the land, and would not reform. 48 They said: "Swear to one another in the name of Allah that we shall make a sudden night swoop on Salih and his family and will then tell their heirs that we did not witness the destruction of his family. We are indeed truthful." 49 And they planned a plan, and We planned a plan while they perceived not. 50 Therefore see what was the result of their scheming – We destroyed them and their entire nation. 51 So these their habitations lie deserted now because of their iniquities. Verily there is a sign in this for those who understand. 52 And we saved those who believed and used to ward off (evil). 53 And (remember) Lut when he said to his people, “What! You stoop to the shameful whereas you can see?” 54 Do you have carnal relations with men rather than women? You are ignorant people". 55 ۞ Then there was no answer of his people save that they said: drive forth the family of Lut from your City, verily they are a people who would be pure! 56 Eventually We saved (Lot) and his family, except his wife. We had decreed that she should be among those who would remain behind. 57 And We rained upon them a rain [of stones], and evil was the rain of those who were warned. 58
