The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 and by that (Power) which created the male and female, 3 Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes); 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 So, I warn you of the blazing Fire. 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 one who gives his wealth to become purified, 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
