The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons present by his side. 13 And made things easy for them. 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked, 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
