The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 You are nothing but a man like us. Bring us a token if you speak the truth." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
