The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn, 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 and flee from the statues! 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
