The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 you strive in various ways. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 but for him that is a miser, and sufficed, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil), 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
