Thamud denied the messengers 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
