Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the Dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me' 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
