The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 And stay away from idols. 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 So that is a tough day. 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 And children to be by his side! 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked round; 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
