The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book and (of) a Quran that makes (things) clear. 1 A time will surely come when those who are bent on denying the truth will wish that they had surrendered themselves to God, 2 Leave them to eat and enjoy, and for aspiration to involve them in play – so they will shortly come to know. 3 We have never destroyed a township without a definite decree having been issued; 4 No people can outstrip the term for its destruction nor can it delay it. 5 (The unbelievers have said), "You to whom the Quran has been revealed are insane. 6 Why do you not bring to us the angels if you are of the truthful ones? 7 We do not send down angels except for a genuine purpose, at which time none will be given any further respite. 8 As for the Admonition, indeed it is We Who have revealed it and it is indeed We Who are its guardians. 9 And certainly We sent (apostles) before you among the nations of yore. 10 And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him. 11 Even so do we let it creep into the hearts of the sinners - 12 they do not believe in it. This has been the wont of people of this kind from ancient times. 13 And even if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they were to continue ascending thereto, 14 still they would say: 'Our eyes were dazzled; truly, we must have been a bewitched people' 15
