So they both proceeded, till, when they embarked the ship, he (Khidr) scuttled it. Musa (Moses) said: "Have you scuttled it in order to drown its people? Verily, you have committed a thing "Imra" (a Munkar - evil, bad, dreadful thing)." 71 He said, "Did I not tell you that you would not be able to remain patient with me?" 72 Moses said: "Rebuke me not for forgetting, nor grieve me by raising difficulties in my case." 73 Then the twain journeyed until when they met a boy, and he killed him. Musa said: hast thou slain a person innocent not in return for a person? Assuredly thou hast committed a thing formidable. 74 ۞ He said: Did I not tell thee that thou couldst not bear with me? 75 Musa said: if I ask thee regarding aught after this, company not with me; surely there hath reached to thee from my side an excuse. 76 So they went on until they came to a town. They asked its people for food, but were refused hospitality. They found a wall in the town which was about to fall down. His companion buttressed it and Moses said, "Had you wished, you could have demanded payment for your labours." 77 Said he, 'This is the parting between me and thee. Now I will tell thee the interpretation of that thou couldst not bear patiently. 78 "As for that boat, it belonged to some needy people who toiled upon the sea - and I desired to damage it because [I knew that] behind them was a king who is wont to seize every boat by brute force. 79 As for the lad, his parents were people of faith, and we feared lest he should plague them with transgression and disbelief, 80 and so we desired that their Sustainer grant them in his stead [a child] of greater purity than him, and closer [to them] in loving tenderness. 81 And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure belonging to them, and their father had been righteous, and thy Lord intended that they should come to their full strength and should bring forth their treasure as a mercy from their Lord; and I did it not upon my own command. Such is the interpretation of that wherewith thou couldst not bear. 82
