۞ We gave Abraham aforetime his rectitude -- for We knew him -- 51 when he said to his father and his people, 'What are these statues unto which you are cleaving?' 52 They replied, "We found our fathers worshipping them". 53 Said he: "Indeed, you and your forefathers have obviously gone astray!" 54 They said, "Have you brought us the truth or are you jesting?" 55 He said, "Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. It was He who created them and I testify to this fact". 56 And by Allah I shall surely devise a plot against your idols after ye turned away backward. 57 So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question]. 58 [When they saw what had happened,] they said: "Who has done this to our gods? Verily, one of the worst wrongdoers is he!" 59 Some of them said: "We heard a youth called Abraham speak (ill) of them." 60 [The others] said: "Then bring him before the peoples eyes, so that they might bear witness [against him]!" 61 They said: art thou the one who hath wrought this unto our gods, O Ibrahim? 62 He said: "Nay, this was done by - this is their biggest one! ask them, if they can speak intelligently!" 63 Then they turned to themselves and said: Surely you yourselves are the unjust; 64 Then they were utterly put to confusion saying, 'Very well indeed thou knowest these do not speak.' 65 He said: Worship ye then instead of Allah that which cannot profit you at all, nor harm you? 66 Shame on you and on whatever you worship instead of God. Can you not understand?" 67 They exclaimed: "Burn him, and [thereby] succour your gods, if you are going to do [anything]!" 68 [But] We said: O fire! Be thou cool, and [a source of] inner peace for Abraham!" 69 and whereas they sought to do evil unto him, We caused them to suffer the greatest loss: 70 for We saved him and Lot, [his brother's son, by guiding them] to the land which We have blessed for all times to come. 71 And We gave him Ishaq and Yaqoub, a son's son, and We made (them) all good. 72 And We made them leaders, guiding (men) by Our Command, and We sent them inspiration to do good deeds, to establish regular prayers, and to practise regular charity; and they constantly served Us (and Us only). 73 And We gave Lut the kingdom and knowledge, and We rescued him from the township that committed vile deeds; indeed those evil people were disobedient. 74 And We admitted him into Our mercy; indeed he is among those who deserve Our proximity. 75
