The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
