The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 "Therefore fear Allah and obey me." 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 "In gardens and water springs?" 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
