[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
