The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 Saleh said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
