The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
