Thamood cried lies to the Envoys 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
