(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
