Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure – We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
