Jonah, too, was one of the Messengers. 139 When he left towards the laden ship. 140 and sailed away in a laden ship, wherein people cast lots. Because he lost, he was thrown into the water. 141 [and they cast him into the sea,] whereupon the great fish swallowed him, for he had been blameworthy. 142 Had he not been of them who glorify Allah, 143 He would have tarried in the belly thereof till the Day when they are raised. 144 ۞ We then put him ashore on a plain, and he was sick. 145 We made a plant of gourd grow up for him. 146 And We sent him to a hundred thousand (folk) or more 147 And they came to believe; so We allowed them to enjoy the good things of life for an age. 148 Now ask them whether your Lord has daughters, whereas they have sons. 149 Or that have We created the angels as females, while they were present? 150 Is it not a lie invented by them when they say: 151 'God has begotten a son.' They are certainly liars. 152 Did He (then) choose daughters rather than sons? 153 What is the matter with you that you make such strange judgements? 154 What, will you not remember? 155 Or have you, perchance, a clear evidence [for your assertions]? 156 Produce, then, that divine writ of yours, if you are speaking the truth! 157 And they have invented a kinship between Him and the jinns, but the jinns know well that they have indeed to appear (before Him) (i.e. they will be brought for accounts). 158 Glory to Allah! (He is free) from the things they ascribe (to Him)! 159 except the servants of God, sincere and devoted. 160 So, verily you (pagans) and those whom you worship (idols). 161 Not against Him can you cause (any) to fall into trial, 162 except him who shall roast in Hell. 163 "There is not one of us who does not have his appointed place," (declare the angels.) 164 we are those who stand ranged in ranks. 165 “And indeed we are those who say His purity.” 166 Even though they (unbelievers) say, 167 Had we a reminder from those of yore, 168 “We would certainly be the chosen bondmen of Allah.” 169 But they disbelieved in it, so they are going to know. 170 Our Word had already preceded Our worshipers, the Messengers, 171 That they would certainly be assisted, 172 And most surely Our host alone shall be the victorious ones. 173 So, (O Prophet), leave them alone for a while, 174 Watch them: they will soon see. 175 Then for Our punishment are they impatient? 176 When that chastisement will descend upon their courtyard, evil shall that Day be for those who had been warned. 177 So turn away from them for a while. 178 and watch. They, too, will watch. 179 Glory to thy Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! (He is free) from what they ascribe (to Him)! 180 Peace be on the Messengers. 181 And all praise to God, the Lord of all the worlds. 182
