And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion. 36 And indeed, the devils avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided 37 To the extent that when the disbeliever will be brought to Us, he will say to his devil, “Alas – if only there was the distance* of east and west, between you and me!” – so what an evil companion** he is! (* Had I not listened to you. **They will be bound together in chains.) 38 And it profiteth you not this day, because ye did wrong, that ye will be sharers in the doom. 39 CANST THOU, perchance, [O Muhammad,] make the deaf hear, or show the right way to the blind or to such as are obviously lost in error? 40 But if We should take you away, still We shall inflict retribution on them; 41 Or show you what We have promised them – We therefore have complete control over them. 42 So hold fast to what has been revealed to you. Surely you are on the Straight Way. 43 And verily it is an admonition unto thee and thy people; and presently ye will be questioned. 44 Yet [above all else,] ask any of Our apostles whom We sent forth before thy time whether We have ever allowed that deities other than the Most Gracious be worshipped! 45
