And indeed We did send Musa (Moses) with Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) to Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and his chiefs (inviting them to Allah's Religion of Islam) He said: "Verily, I am a Messenger of the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)." 46 But when he came to them with Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) behold! They laughed at them. 47 And not a sign We shewed them but it was greater than the like thereof; and We laid hold of them with the torment that haply they might turn. 48 And they said, "O thou sorcerer! Invoke thy Lord for us according to His covenant with thee; for we shall truly accept guidance." 49 But when We eased them of the torment, behold! they broke their word. 50 And Firon proclaimed amongst his people: O my people! is not the kingdom of Egypt mine? And these rivers flow beneath me; do you not then see? 51 I am surely better than this fellow, who is despicable and can hardly make (his meaning) plain! 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 He (Pharaoh) intimidated his nation, so they obeyed him, for they were a sinning nation. 54 But when they roused Our anger We inflicted retributive punishment and drowned them all, 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
