We sent Moses with Our signs to the Pharaoh and his nobles. He said: "I have been sent by the Lord of all the worlds." 46 but when he came to them with Our signs, they ridiculed them, 47 Every Sign that We showed them was greater than its predecessor; and then We seized them with Our chastisement so that they may return (to the Right Way). 48 And they said, 'Sorcerer, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee, and surely we shall be right-guided.' 49 But whenever We removed the suffering from them, lo! they would break their word. 50 And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern? 51 “Or that I am better than him, for he is lowly – and he does not seem to talk plainly.” 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 Then he incited his people and they obeyed him; verily they were ever a transgressing people. 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
