We sent Moses with Our signs to the Pharaoh and his nobles. He said: "I have been sent by the Lord of all the worlds." 46 So when he brought Our signs to them, they started mocking at them! 47 And not a sign We shewed them but it was greater than the like thereof; and We laid hold of them with the torment that haply they might turn. 48 And they said: O wizard! Entreat thy Lord for us by the pact that He hath made with thee. Lo! we verily will walk aright. 49 Then when We had removed from them the torment, behold they were breaking their promise. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion of Egypt belong to me, (witness) these streams flowing underneath my (palace)? What! see ye not then? 51 Am I better or this contemptible man who is scarcely able to express himself? 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 So he incited his people to levity and they obeyed him: surely they were a transgressing people. 54 So when they angered Us, We punished them, and drowned them all. 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
