We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He said, "I am the messenger of the Lord of the Universe," 46 But when he brought them Our signs, lo, they laughed at them. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 (Whenever they faced an affliction) they would say: “O magician, pray for us to your Lord according to your station with Him. We shall certainly be guided to the Right Way.” 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, lo! they broke the pledge. 50 Then Pharaoh made a proclamation to his people: 'My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine and these rivers which flow beneath me? What, can you not see? 51 "Am I not better than this one [Musa (Moses)], who is Mahin [has no honour nor any respect, and is weak and despicable] and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 But why have not bracelets of gold been put upon him, or why have there not come with him angels as companions? 53 Thus he made light (of the matter) to his people, and they obeyed him. They were certainly wicked. 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
